  • Jason P. Howe

I’m currently reading A House in the Sky, Amanda Lindhout’s memoir of the 460 days she spent as a hostage of Islamist insurgents in war-torn Somalia. So far it’s been utterly captivating, but I’ll save that for my review. Before she was kidnapped, Amanda went on assignment in Kandahar as a freelance photographer and war correspondent. There,…

  • Avengers: Age of Ultron

Man, I love Marvel movies. They’re just so exciting and action-packed and fraught with emotional turmoil. I was disappointed in the ending, but that’s not to say that this movie wasn’t fantastic. And Ultron’s rendition of “I got no strings” from Pinocchio was perfectly terrifying. I cannot wait for Civil War (or for Black Widow’s movie, whenever that…

  • Mean Streak by Sandra Brown

Associated Press said: “Full of surprises and terrific characters, Mean Streak is one of Brown’s best novels.” I’d say the main twist was a bit far-fetched, and the ending a bit too neat, but she can definitely spin a yarn, I’ll give her that.

  • Wicked Blood

My, my, my, that Abigail Breslin is a talented actress, isn’t she? Sean Bean dies, but you knew that already.

  • The Boxtrolls

The story was cute, the animation exceptional, and Dakota Fanning did an excellent job voicing the little red headed brat, but the end scene where Mr. Pickles (Richard Ayoade) talks about how hard the animators must have worked to make him blink was my favourite part by far.

  • Born Weird by Andrew Kaufman

Honestly, I’m not sure how he manages to do it—to weave magical realism so seamlessly with morality and truth—but he does it so convincingly that it takes a minute to understand what he’s writing about. He’s a genius. No. 7 on my challenge. I only just discovered Kaufman last year, but he’s quickly become one of…

  • My friend the photographer

I have an insanely talented photographer friend. His name is Alexander Torres. He was born in Venezuela, attended high school in England, studied in Montreal, and now lives in Vancouver working in the film industry. I think that his experience as a traveler shows in his work. He is incredibly talented. See for yourself. If you’re…

  • Tonight You’re Mine / You Instead

Bickering musicians handcuffed together for the duration of an insane music festival? Yes. Absolutely. I love it. Depending on where you’re watching, this movie was released under two titles. I first saw it as You Instead, but I like this poster better.

  • Kanye’s babble is perfect for phone cases.

My friend asked me to design a phone case for her. She loves Kanye, so I went looking for quotes. Lo and behold, he’s a gold mine for ridiculousness. She also likes Harry Potter, so I did these too. And yes, if we do print these cases, we’ll pay this dude for the Harry /…
