  • Me Before You

Despite knowing that Jojo Moyes wrote the screenplay—or perhaps because of it—I was disappointed in how much detail was left out of the movie. While I understand the desire to make this adaptation a light-to-medium-weight-hearted, tear-jerking chick flick that appeals to the tissue-bearing masses, by glossing over, condensing and cutting so much of the book’s content, quite a bit was…

  • Lost Boy by Ruth B.

It may be because I just read Peter Pan, or because Neverland has a strong connection to my childhood, or because I want to hang out with Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and Wendy Darling, or because I love piano ballads, but I am in love with this song. Lost Boy There was a time when I was alone Nowhere…

  • 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

This was nothing if not a Michael Bay film, and I unabashedly love Michael Bay films. I also love movies based on true stories, films about heroism, brotherhood, and war, and a lot of action, so this movie got two thumbs way way up from me. Not to mention John Krasinski’s talent and general appearance.

  • #TBT

This week was kind of momentous, and I have the perfect Throwback Thursday post to celebrate. Published in May 2012, this was the last article I ever wrote for the Virden Empire-Advance. Though I was taking distance courses from SFU the entire time I was living and working in Manitoba, my decision to uproot my life, leave…

  • Magical Thinking by Augusten Burroughs

It’s been a while since I’ve delved into the insanely entertaining (and entertainingly insane) world of Augusten Burroughs and I am very glad to have revisited it. While his captivating memoirs each focus on certain eras in his life (Running with Scissors on his relationship with his mother and his time spent living with her…

  • Undermajordomo Minor by Patrick deWitt

I, like most everyone else, was a big fan of deWitt’s runaway hit (heh, that rhymed) The Sisters Brothers, so my expectations for the follow-up were of average height—which, for a shorty like me, is pretty high. Now, it’s not that this meandering little tale didn’t meet my average/high expectations, but it didn’t exceed them, either. So while I…

  • Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

Peter Pan is my mom’s favourite story, so Peter and Wendy were always on the periphery of my childhood. When I found this beautiful edition from Puffin Chalk Classics, I couldn’t resist. I may be cheating a bit by including this one on my challenge (it’s not technically written from a child’s perspective), but it was time…

  • Quoted: Undermajordomo Minor

The position (Mr Olderglough assigned it the name of undermajordomo, which Lucy and Father Raymond decided was not a word at all) was lowly and the pay mirrored this but Lucy, having nothing better to do, and nowhere in the world to be … embraced his fate and wrote back to Mr Olderglough, formally accepting the offer,…

  • American Ultra

I’m a little concerned for my taste in movies. Or maybe my expectations were so low that this movie literally could not have been any worse than I thought it would be, therefore making it appear better than it actually is. I mean, it wasn’t amazing (obviously), but I didn’t hate it. In fact, it was…
