The Legend of Tarzan
“A CGI masterpiece.” —Tori Elliott Other, less sarcastic, thoughts: Margot Robbie was wonderful in her role as Jane, the Damsel in Distress who refuses to act like a Damsel in Distress. I’m not sure when Samuel L. Jackson became a comic relief actor, but I’m glad he was cast in this movie as such. The film’s…

Me Before You
Despite knowing that Jojo Moyes wrote the screenplay—or perhaps because of it—I was disappointed in how much detail was left out of the movie. While I understand the desire to make this adaptation a light-to-medium-weight-hearted, tear-jerking chick flick that appeals to the tissue-bearing masses, by glossing over, condensing and cutting so much of the book’s content, quite a bit was…

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
This was nothing if not a Michael Bay film, and I unabashedly love Michael Bay films. I also love movies based on true stories, films about heroism, brotherhood, and war, and a lot of action, so this movie got two thumbs way way up from me. Not to mention John Krasinski’s talent and general appearance.

Undermajordomo Minor by Patrick deWitt
I, like most everyone else, was a big fan of deWitt’s runaway hit (heh, that rhymed) The Sisters Brothers, so my expectations for the follow-up were of average height—which, for a shorty like me, is pretty high. Now, it’s not that this meandering little tale didn’t meet my average/high expectations, but it didn’t exceed them, either. So while I…

American Ultra
I’m a little concerned for my taste in movies. Or maybe my expectations were so low that this movie literally could not have been any worse than I thought it would be, therefore making it appear better than it actually is. I mean, it wasn’t amazing (obviously), but I didn’t hate it. In fact, it was…

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater
I’ll say it again: Stiefvater truly is a magician of language. While I admit there were a few instances where it seemed a little like she was grandstanding for the big finale, this was most definitely a fantastic denouement for the Raven cycle. I am happy. And seriously, I can’t get over how perfect this is: “Once, when Adam…

How to be Single
Well, shock me, shock me, shock me, Dakota Johnson isn’t terrible in this movie. Actually, between the many hilarious and outrageous moments (of which Rebel Wilson is queen), both Johnson and Wilson’s characters—and the movie in general—were surprisingly insightful. I got hit by a few truth bombs that I did not see coming. And, true to form of multi-narrative films (think: He’s Just…
